Annemarié van Niekerk (1962) was a university lecturer and critic in South Africa before moving back to the Netherlands in 2004. Since then, she has been writing reviews for Trouw. In 2019, she and Pieta van Beek published My Mother’s Mother’s Mother. In 2021, her memoir Bringing Back the Heart was published, receiving praise from both the press and readers. It was translated into Afrikaans and English and won the Henriëtte Roland Holst Award in 2023. The Punishment Chair is her debut novel.
